What happens if the pathway does not cover you?

You can still speak to the pharmacist. What happens next depends on why the pathway does not cover you.

Outside the age range

The pharmacist can still give advice and help you choose an over-the-counter treatment. You may need to see a GP for treatment.

The pharmacist cannot treat it

If your symptoms do not fit the pathway, or something needs a closer look, you are told why and where to go instead. That is usually your GP practice, and sometimes a sexual health clinic or another service.

It needs urgent care

If the pharmacist finds signs of something more serious, they arrange an urgent same day referral to your GP practice or the out of hours service.

In an emergency they will direct you to A and E or call 999.

Do you need to book, or can you walk in?

You can do either. Booking is the reliable way to be seen, because it sets time aside with the pharmacist. You do not need a referral, and the consultation is free on the NHS whichever way you come in.

If you walk in, tell a member of the team you are here for Pharmacy First and which condition it is about. The pharmacist will see you as soon as they are free.

The pharmacy closes at 2pm on Thursdays and 1pm on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays.

How a Pharmacy First consultation works

Every Pharmacy First consultation at Leyton Pharmacy follows four steps: you book for your condition, the pharmacist assesses you, you are told what they found, and your GP record is updated.

1

You choose your condition and book

Pick the consultation that matches what you want help with. Each condition has its own booking. You can also walk in and tell the team why you have come.

2

The pharmacist asks about your symptoms and health

What is happening and for how long, your medical history, and anything you currently take. For some conditions they examine you, for example your throat, ear or skin.

3

You are told what they found

A straight answer at the consultation: advice and self care, an over-the-counter treatment, or a prescription medicine where the NHS pathway allows it. If the pharmacy is not the right place, you are told why and where to go instead.

4

Your GP record is updated

A record of the consultation is sent to your GP practice. You are told what to expect and when to come back if things do not improve.

How much does Pharmacy First cost?

Nothing for the consultation. Pharmacy First is a free NHS service. If the pharmacist supplies a medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.

If you do not normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you do not pay here either. Anything you buy over the counter is paid for in the usual way.

Questions people ask

About the service

Do I need a GP referral for Pharmacy First?

No. You do not need a GP referral or a GP appointment to use Pharmacy First at Leyton Pharmacy. You book the consultation directly with us, or walk in. Your GP practice, NHS 111 or an urgent care service can also refer you.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

You can do either. Booking is the reliable way to be seen, because it sets time aside with the pharmacist. Choose your condition on this page to book online, come into the pharmacy during opening hours, or call 0208 556 4292.

Is Pharmacy First free?

Yes. Pharmacy First is a free NHS service, so the consultation costs you nothing. If the pharmacist supplies a medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.

What happens at a Pharmacy First consultation?

The pharmacist asks about your symptoms, your medical history and anything you already take, and examines you where that is needed. You are then told what they found. That may be advice and self care, an over-the-counter treatment, a prescription medicine where the NHS pathway allows it, or a referral.

What should I bring?

Bring a list of anything you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription, and tell the pharmacist about any allergies.

Will you tell my GP?

Yes. A record of your Pharmacy First consultation is sent to your GP practice so that your medical record stays up to date.

Do I have to live in Leyton to use Pharmacy First?

No. The service is open to anyone who can travel to Leyton Pharmacy at 98 Francis Road, London E10 6PP. You do not need to be registered with a GP practice nearby.

Treatment and suitability

Which conditions can the pharmacist treat?

Leyton Pharmacy offers free NHS Pharmacy First consultations for seven conditions: urinary tract infections in women, sore throat, earache in children, sinusitis, impetigo, infected insect bites and shingles. Each condition has its own consultation, which you book separately.

Will I get antibiotics?

Only if the pharmacist's assessment shows they are needed. Many of these conditions get better without antibiotics, and the pharmacist follows the NHS clinical pathway for each one. You may be given advice, pain relief or a different treatment instead.

Will I definitely be given treatment?

No. A prescription medicine is supplied only where the pharmacist's assessment and the NHS pathway allow it. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a supply.

Can I bring my child?

Yes, if your child is within the age range for the condition. Earache is covered for ages 1 to 17, impetigo and infected insect bites from age 1, sore throat from age 5 and sinusitis from age 12.

What if I am outside the age range?

The pharmacist can still give advice and help you choose an over-the-counter treatment, but you may need to see a GP for treatment.

What if my symptoms do not improve?

Come back to the pharmacy, contact your GP practice or get help from NHS 111. The pharmacist tells you at the consultation how long things should take to improve. Call 999 or go to A and E in an emergency.
