Who can be seen for a UTI at the pharmacy?

The NHS Pharmacy First pathway is for uncomplicated UTIs in women aged 16 to 64. It is not suitable during pregnancy, or for anyone with a catheter, diabetes or repeated infections.

A pharmacy consultation fits if

  • You are a woman aged 16 to 64.
  • You have symptoms of a lower urinary tract infection, such as pain or burning when you pass urine.
  • You are otherwise well.
  • You can attend a consultation with the pharmacist.

Meeting these does not by itself mean a prescription medicine will be supplied. That is what the consultation decides.

The pharmacy pathway does not cover you if

  • You are pregnant.
  • You have a urinary catheter.
  • You have diabetes.
  • You have had 2 UTIs in the last 6 months, or 3 in the last 12 months.
  • You are a man, or you are under 16 or aged 65 or over.

If any of these apply, speak to your GP or NHS 111 first. The section below explains when.

What happens at a UTI consultation?

A UTI consultation at Leyton Pharmacy follows four steps: questions about your symptoms, a check for anything more serious, a decision on treatment, and advice on when to come back.

1

You are asked about three key symptoms

Pain or burning when you pass urine, newly needing to pass urine at night, and urine that looks cloudy.

2

The pharmacist checks for anything more serious

Signs of a kidney infection, such as pain in your back under the ribs, a temperature, shivering or feeling sick. If these are present, you are referred the same day.

3

You are told whether treatment is suitable

A straight answer at the consultation. Mild symptoms: pain relief and self care first. Moderate to severe symptoms: a short course of antibiotics, where the pathway allows it.

4

You are told when to come back

Return to the pharmacy if you are no better within 48 hours, or contact your GP practice if your symptoms get worse quickly.

When should you see a GP or call 111 instead?

Some people with UTI symptoms should be seen by a GP or NHS 111 rather than a pharmacist. This is the NHS advice.

Ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from NHS 111

If you are a man, are aged 65 or over, or the symptoms are in a child under 16.

If you are pregnant, have diabetes, use a catheter, have a weakened immune system, or keep getting UTIs.

If you have blood in your urine, pain in your lower tummy or back, a very high or very low temperature, or symptoms that have not improved or have got worse within 48 hours.

Call 999 or go to A and E

If you or your child are confused, drowsy or have difficulty speaking.

How much does it cost?

The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.

If you do not normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you do not pay here either. Anything you buy over the counter is paid for in the usual way.

Questions people ask

About the consultation

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You do not need a GP referral or a GP appointment for a UTI consultation at Leyton Pharmacy. You book the consultation directly with us.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

You can do either. Booking is the reliable way to be seen, because it sets time aside with the pharmacist. You can also come into the pharmacy during opening hours, or call 0208 556 4292.

What should I bring?

Bring a list of anything you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription, and tell the pharmacist about any allergies.

Will I definitely be given treatment?

No. A prescription medicine is supplied only where the pharmacist's assessment and the NHS pathway allow it. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a supply. If it is not suitable, you are told why and where to go instead.

About UTIs

Can a pharmacist give antibiotics for a UTI?

Yes. Under NHS Pharmacy First, a pharmacist at Leyton Pharmacy can supply antibiotics for an uncomplicated UTI in women aged 16 to 64 if the assessment shows they are needed. If your symptoms are mild, the pharmacist may recommend pain relief and self care first.

Do I need to bring a urine sample?

No. The assessment is based on your symptoms. The pharmacist may ask to look at a sample to see whether your urine is cloudy.

Why can men not be treated for a UTI at the pharmacy?

The NHS Pharmacy First UTI pathway covers women aged 16 to 64 only. The NHS advises men with UTI symptoms to ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from NHS 111.

What if I am pregnant?

Pregnancy is not covered by the pharmacy pathway. The NHS advises asking for an urgent GP appointment or getting help from NHS 111 if you are pregnant and have UTI symptoms.

What if my UTI has not cleared after treatment?

Come back to the pharmacy or contact your GP practice if your symptoms have not improved within 48 hours of starting antibiotics, or sooner if they get worse quickly.
