Who can be seen for shingles at the pharmacy?

The NHS Pharmacy First pathway covers shingles in adults aged 18 and over. It is not suitable during pregnancy, and a rash on the face or near the eye needs urgent assessment.

A pharmacy consultation fits if

  • You are aged 18 or over.
  • You have a rash you think is shingles: usually a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body.
  • You can travel to the pharmacy, so the rash can be examined.

Meeting these does not by itself mean a prescription medicine will be supplied. That is what the consultation decides.

The pharmacy pathway does not cover you if

  • You are under 18.
  • You are pregnant.

A rash on your face, near your eye or on your nose needs urgent assessment. Speak to your GP or NHS 111 first. The section below explains when.

What happens at a shingles consultation?

A shingles consultation at Leyton Pharmacy follows four steps: a check for anything urgent, an examination of the rash, a decision on treatment, and advice on pain and what to watch for.

1

The pharmacist checks for anything urgent

Shingles on the head or neck, a rash near the eye or on the nose, a change in your vision, or a severely weakened immune system need urgent care, not a pharmacy consultation.

2

The rash is examined

The pharmacist checks whether it follows the usual pattern: pain or tingling first, then a blistering rash on one side of the body.

3

You are told whether treatment is suitable

A straight answer at the consultation. Antiviral medicine is considered within 72 hours of the rash appearing, and up to a week in some cases. Whether it is offered depends on things like your age, where the rash is and how severe the pain is.

4

You are given advice on pain and what to watch for

Come back to the pharmacy or contact your GP practice if it gets worse quickly, or has not improved after 7 days of treatment.

When should you see a GP or call 111 instead?

Some people with shingles should be seen by a GP or need urgent help rather than a pharmacist. This is the NHS advice.

Ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from NHS 111

If you think you have shingles and you are pregnant, are under 18, or have a severely weakened immune system.

If the rash is near your eyes or nose, your vision has changed, or you are breastfeeding and the rash is on your breasts.

Call 999 or go to A and E

If you have a stiff neck, cannot bear bright light, are confused, have muscle weakness, lose control of your bladder or bowels, or one side of your face droops. The pharmacist will direct you to emergency care if they see any of these signs.

How much does it cost?

The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.

If you do not normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you do not pay here either. Anything you buy over the counter is paid for in the usual way.

Questions people ask

About the consultation

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You do not need a GP referral or a GP appointment for a shingles consultation at Leyton Pharmacy. You book the consultation directly with us.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

You can do either. Booking is the reliable way to be seen, because it sets time aside with the pharmacist. You can also come into the pharmacy during opening hours, or call 0208 556 4292.

What should I bring?

Bring a list of anything you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription, and tell the pharmacist about any allergies.

Will I definitely be given treatment?

No. A prescription medicine is supplied only where the pharmacist's assessment and the NHS pathway allow it. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a supply. If it is not suitable, you are told why and where to go instead.

About shingles

Can a pharmacist treat shingles?

Yes. Under NHS Pharmacy First, a pharmacist at Leyton Pharmacy can assess adults aged 18 and over with shingles, and can supply antiviral medicine if the assessment shows it is needed.

How quickly do I need to be seen for shingles?

As soon as you can. The NHS says antiviral medicine works best when it is started within 3 days of the rash appearing.

Is shingles contagious?

You cannot spread shingles to others, but people who have not had chickenpox could catch chickenpox from you. The NHS advises avoiding pregnant people who have not had chickenpox, people with a weakened immune system and babies under 1 month old.

How long does shingles last?

It can take up to 4 weeks for the shingles rash to heal. Pain can continue for some weeks after the rash has gone, but usually gets better over time.

Can I have the shingles vaccine?

After you have recovered, you may be able to have the NHS shingles vaccine if you are in an eligible group. The pharmacist can tell you where to find out.
