Who can be seen for a sore throat at the pharmacy?

The NHS Pharmacy First pathway covers a sore throat in adults and children aged 5 and over. A child under 5 should be seen by a GP.

A pharmacy consultation fits if

  • You are aged 5 or over.
  • You have a sore throat that has come on recently.
  • You can travel to the pharmacy, so your throat can be examined.

Meeting these does not by itself mean a prescription medicine will be supplied. That is what the consultation decides.

The pharmacy pathway does not cover you if

  • The patient is a child under 5.
  • You are pregnant and under 16.

The pharmacist will also refer you to your GP if you have a weakened immune system, or signs of another condition such as scarlet fever or glandular fever.

What happens at a sore throat consultation?

A sore throat consultation at Leyton Pharmacy follows four steps: a check for anything urgent, an examination of your throat, a decision on treatment, and advice on when to come back.

1

The pharmacist checks for anything urgent

Difficulty swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice or noisy breathing need emergency care, not a pharmacy consultation.

2

Your throat is examined and scored

One point each for a fever, pus on the tonsils, coming in within 3 days of it starting, severely inflamed tonsils, and having no cough or cold symptoms.

3

You are told whether treatment is suitable

A straight answer at the consultation. A low score: self care and pain relief. A high score with severe symptoms: antibiotics may be offered, where the pathway allows it.

4

You are told when to come back

Return to the pharmacy if you are no better within 3 to 5 days, or after a week if your symptoms were mild.

When should you see a GP or call 111 instead?

Some sore throats should be seen by a GP or need urgent help rather than a pharmacist. This is the NHS advice.

See a GP

If your child is under 5 and needs help for a sore throat.

If the sore throat has not improved after a week.

Ask for an urgent GP appointment or get advice from NHS 111

If you or your child have a very high temperature, or signs of dehydration.

Call 999

If you or your child have difficulty breathing, are unable to swallow, or are making a high pitched sound when breathing.

How much does it cost?

The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.

If you do not normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you do not pay here either. Anything you buy over the counter is paid for in the usual way.

Questions people ask

About the consultation

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You do not need a GP referral or a GP appointment for a sore throat consultation at Leyton Pharmacy. You book the consultation directly with us.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

You can do either. Booking is the reliable way to be seen, because it sets time aside with the pharmacist. You can also come into the pharmacy during opening hours, or call 0208 556 4292.

What should I bring?

Bring a list of anything you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription, and tell the pharmacist about any allergies.

Will I definitely be given treatment?

No. A prescription medicine is supplied only where the pharmacist's assessment and the NHS pathway allow it. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a supply. If it is not suitable, you are told why and where to go instead.

About sore throats

Will I get antibiotics for a sore throat?

Only if the assessment shows they are needed. Most sore throats get better by themselves within a week, and antibiotics make little difference to how long symptoms last.

Can I bring my child?

Yes, if they are aged 5 or over. The NHS advises seeing a GP for a child under 5 who needs help for a sore throat.

How long does a sore throat last?

Sore throats normally get better by themselves within a week. See a GP if yours has not improved after a week.

How does the pharmacist decide whether I need antibiotics?

The pharmacist examines your throat and scores five signs: a fever, pus on the tonsils, how quickly the sore throat came on, how inflamed the tonsils are, and whether you have a cough or cold symptoms. A low score means self care. A high score with severe symptoms means antibiotics may be offered.

What can I take in the meantime?

Pain relief you can buy over the counter, and plenty of fluids. The pharmacist can advise on what suits you or your child.
