Who can be seen for sinusitis at the pharmacy?
The NHS Pharmacy First pathway covers acute sinusitis in adults and children aged 12 and over. It does not cover symptoms that have lasted more than 12 weeks, or people with a weakened immune system.
A pharmacy consultation fits if
- You are aged 12 or over.
- You have a blocked or runny nose together with pain or pressure in your face, a headache, or a reduced sense of smell.
- You are otherwise well.
- You can travel to the pharmacy for your consultation.
Meeting these does not by itself mean a prescription medicine will be supplied. That is what the consultation decides.
The pharmacy pathway does not cover you if
- The patient is a child aged 11 or under.
- You have a weakened immune system.
- Your symptoms have lasted more than 12 weeks.
- You are pregnant and under 16.
If any of these apply, speak to your GP or NHS 111 first. The section below explains when.
What happens at a sinusitis consultation?
A sinusitis consultation at Leyton Pharmacy follows four steps: a check for anything urgent, questions about how long you have had symptoms, a decision on treatment, and advice on when to come back.
1
The pharmacist checks for anything urgent
Swelling or redness around an eye, a change in your vision, a severe headache at the front of your head or a stiff neck need urgent care, not a pharmacy consultation.
2
You are asked how long you have had symptoms
For symptoms of 10 days or less, self care and pain relief are recommended. Antibiotics are not needed at this stage.
3
You are told whether treatment is suitable
A straight answer at the consultation. If symptoms have lasted more than 10 days without improving, a steroid nasal spray may be offered. Antibiotics are considered only where there are signs of a bacterial infection and the pathway allows it.
4
You are told when to come back
Return to the pharmacy if you are no better after 7 days, or contact your GP practice if your symptoms get worse quickly.
When should you see a GP or call 111 instead?
Some people with sinusitis should be seen by a GP or need urgent help rather than a pharmacist. This is the NHS advice.
See a GP
If your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment from a pharmacist or GP, or after 3 weeks of treating it yourself.
If you keep getting sinusitis, or your child is aged 11 or under.
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from NHS 111
If you are very unwell, painkillers do not help or your symptoms get worse, or you have a weakened immune system.
Call 999 or go to A and E
If you have swelling or redness around an eye, double or reduced vision, swelling over your forehead, a severe headache at the front of your head, or a stiff neck. The pharmacist will direct you to emergency care if they see any of these signs.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free on the NHS. If the pharmacist supplies a medicine, the usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt.
If you do not normally pay for NHS prescriptions, you do not pay here either. Anything you buy over the counter is paid for in the usual way.
