What BMI do you need for the weight loss service?

Generally a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above where you have a weight-related health condition. You can work out a rough figure below, but your BMI is measured at the pharmacy rather than taken from figures you provide.

Work out your BMI

Choose your units
cm
kg

Enter your height and weight to see your BMI.

30 BMI of 30 or above is the general threshold for an assessment.
27 BMI of 27 or above may be assessed where there is a weight-related health condition.

Thresholds are read differently for some family backgrounds, where health risk rises at a lower BMI. The pharmacist applies the adjusted figure where it is relevant to you.

BMI is not the whole assessment. Where your weight sits, your medical history and what you already take all form part of the pharmacist's judgement, and a BMI above the threshold does not on its own mean the service is suitable.

What the weight loss service includes

Every weight loss consultation at Leyton Pharmacy includes a health and BMI assessment, a plan agreed with you, scheduled follow-up reviews, and access to the pharmacist between appointments.

A health and BMI assessment

Height, weight and BMI measured at the pharmacy, plus your medical history and anything you already take.

A plan agreed with you

The pharmacist sets out the options that fit your assessment, and you decide together what to do.

Reviews for as long as you stay on the service

Scheduled appointments to check how you are getting on and change the plan if it is not working.

Somewhere to ask between reviews

You can call or come in if something changes or you are unsure about anything.

Who can use the weight loss clinic?

The service is for adults aged 18 and over whose BMI meets the threshold, measured at the pharmacy. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for anyone with a history of an eating disorder.

You can be assessed if

  • You are 18 or over.
  • Your BMI meets the threshold for the service, which the pharmacist will measure at your appointment.
  • You can travel to the pharmacy for your consultation and for your reviews.
  • You are willing to have your health and current medicines discussed as part of the assessment.

Meeting these does not by itself mean the service is right for you. That is what the consultation decides.

The service is not suitable if

  • You are under 18.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive.
  • You have or have had an eating disorder.
  • You are already under NHS weight management care for the same thing.
  • You have a medical condition the pharmacist judges should be managed by your GP first.

If we cannot help, we will say so at the appointment and point you to your GP, who can refer you to NHS weight management support.

What happens at your first appointment?

Your first appointment takes place in a private room at Leyton Pharmacy and follows four steps: measurement, a suitability decision, a discussion of the options, and booking your first review.

1

You are measured and asked about your health

Height, weight and BMI, then your medical history, anything you currently take, and what you have already tried.

2

The pharmacist tells you whether the service is right for you

Straight answer at the appointment. If it is not suitable, you are told why and where to go instead.

3

You go through the options and agree a plan

What is involved, what it costs, what is expected of you, and what the risks are. You decide whether to start.

4

Your first review is booked before you leave

You leave with a date, and with a way to reach us if something changes before then.

What happens at your follow-up reviews

Follow-up reviews are scheduled twice a month. Each one repeats the measurements taken at your first appointment, and is where the plan is adjusted, paused or stopped.

Reviews continue for as long as you stay on the programme. Each one repeats the measurements taken at your first appointment, so you and the pharmacist are looking at the same numbers over time rather than at how a week felt.

The review is also where the plan changes. If it is not working, or your circumstances have moved, that is the appointment to say so. The pharmacist can adjust the plan, pause it, or stop it.

If at any review the pharmacist judges the service is no longer appropriate for you, they will tell you and explain what to do next.

Reviews are scheduled twice a month.

NHS or private weight management

Your GP can refer you to NHS weight management support, which is free but subject to local criteria and waiting times. Leyton Pharmacy offers the private route, which you book directly without a referral.

Through the NHS

Your GP can refer you to NHS weight management support. It is free, and the referral criteria and waiting times are set locally rather than by us.

A pharmacy cannot make an NHS weight management referral. If that is the route you want, your GP is the person to speak to.

Privately, with us

You book directly, without a referral, and you are usually seen sooner. You pay for the consultation and for whatever you and the pharmacist agree.

Choosing the private route does not remove your NHS options. You can speak to your GP at any point, and we would encourage you to tell them you are using the service.

Questions people ask

About the service

Where is your weight loss clinic in east London?

Leyton Pharmacy is at 98 Francis Road, Leyton, London E10 6PP, a few minutes from Leyton station on the Central line. Consultations take place in a private room at the pharmacy.

Do I have to live in Leyton to use the service?

No. The Leyton Pharmacy weight loss service is open to any adult who can travel to the pharmacy for their consultation and follow-up reviews. People come from across east London.

Do I need a GP referral for the weight loss service?

No. You do not need a GP referral to use the weight loss service at Leyton Pharmacy, and you book the consultation directly with us. Your GP can refer you to NHS weight management support if that is the route you would prefer.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

Please book. The weight loss consultation takes place in a private room with the pharmacist and needs time set aside, so a booked appointment is the reliable way to be seen.

What happens at a weight loss consultation?

At a weight loss consultation you are measured, asked about your health and what you already take, and told whether the service is suitable for you. If it is, you go through the options and agree a plan, and your first review is booked before you leave.

Do I need to prepare for my appointment?

Bring a list of anything you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription, and any recent readings you have such as blood pressure. Nothing else is needed for your first appointment.

How long do I stay on the weight loss service?

You stay on the service for as long as it is working and the pharmacist judges it is still appropriate. It is reviewed at every appointment rather than fixed at the start, and you can stop at any point.

Will you tell my GP?

We would encourage you to tell your GP you are using the service, and with your consent we can write to them. It is your decision.

BMI and eligibility

What BMI do I need for the weight loss service?

Generally a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above where there is a weight-related health condition. Your BMI is measured at the pharmacy at your appointment.

How do you work out my BMI?

Your BMI is worked out from your height and weight, both measured at the pharmacy. We do not work from figures you give us over the phone, because the number decides whether the assessment can go ahead.

Is the BMI threshold different for some people?

Yes. Health risk rises at a lower BMI for some family backgrounds, and the pharmacist applies the adjusted figure where it is relevant.

My BMI is below the threshold. Can I still be seen?

Not for this service. The pharmacist can talk to you about what else is available, and your GP is the route to NHS weight management support.

Is BMI the only thing you look at?

No. Your medical history, anything you already take, and what you have tried before all form part of the assessment. A BMI above the threshold does not on its own mean the weight loss service is suitable for you.

Am I eligible if I have a health condition?

It depends on the condition. Some make the service more appropriate, some mean it should be managed by your GP first. The pharmacist will tell you which applies at your appointment.
