How to burn bakhoor

1. Light a charcoal disc with tongs until it glows evenly (about a minute) and place it in a heat-proof bakhoor burner (mabkhara).
2. Wait a minute or two for the charcoal to turn grey, then place a small piece of bakhoor on top.
3. Let the fragrant smoke drift through the room. Add another small piece for a stronger scent.

An electric bakhoor burner also works: place a small piece on the heating plate. Reseal the box after use to keep the bakhoor moist and fragrant.

Frequently asked questions

What does Bint Hooran bakhoor smell like?

It has a warm, sweet scent of floral, woody and musky notes with a gentle vanilla feel. It is cosy rather than smoky or heavy.

What is bakhoor?

Bakhoor (also spelled bukhoor) is traditional Arabian incense made from wood chips or pressed wood powder soaked in fragrant oils. It is burned on charcoal or an electric burner to perfume the home, clothes and fabrics.

How do you burn bakhoor?

Heat a charcoal disc until it glows, place it in a heat-proof burner, then add a small piece of bakhoor on top. An electric bakhoor burner works too and needs no charcoal.

What is the difference between bakhoor and incense sticks?

Incense sticks burn on their own, while bakhoor is heated on charcoal or an electric burner. Bakhoor gives a richer, more perfume-like scent and is traditionally used to scent clothes and fabrics as well as rooms.

How long does a 40g box last?

You only need a small piece each time, so a 40g box lasts for many sessions. Reseal the box after use to keep it fresh.
