How a consultation works

Every consultation at Leyton Pharmacy follows four steps: you book for your condition, the pharmacist assesses you, you are told whether treatment is suitable, and if it is, it is supplied with advice.

1

You choose your condition and book

Pick the consultation that matches what you want help with. Each condition has its own booking.

2

The pharmacist asks about your symptoms and health

What is happening and for how long, what you have already tried, your medical history, and anything you currently take.

3

You are told whether treatment is suitable

A straight answer at the consultation. If it is not suitable, you are told why and where to go instead.

4

If it is suitable, treatment is supplied with advice

How to use it, what to expect, and when to come back or see your GP if things do not improve.

Is a pharmacy consultation right for you?

These consultations are for common conditions in people who are otherwise well. Severe, sudden or unexplained symptoms should be seen by your GP or NHS 111 first.

A pharmacy consultation fits if

  • You have one of the conditions on this page, or symptoms that match it.
  • Your symptoms are mild to moderate and you are otherwise well.
  • You can tell the pharmacist about your medical history and anything you currently take.
  • You can travel to the pharmacy for your consultation.

Each service has its own criteria, including age. The pharmacist checks them at the consultation, and that is what decides whether treatment can be supplied.

Speak to your GP or NHS 111 first if

  • Your symptoms are severe, came on suddenly, or are getting worse quickly.
  • You have symptoms you cannot explain, such as bleeding, weight loss or a new lump.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, as some treatments are not suitable.
  • Your GP or a specialist is already managing the same condition.

In an emergency, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing or signs of a stroke, call 999.

NHS or private

Your GP can assess all of these conditions on the NHS. Leyton Pharmacy offers the private route, which you book directly without a GP appointment or referral.

Through the NHS

Your GP can assess any of the conditions on this page. The appointment is free, and NHS prescription charges apply unless you are exempt.

Advice at the pharmacy counter is also free, and for some of these conditions there are remedies you can buy without a prescription. Ask us, and we will tell you if that is the better place to start.

Privately, with us

You book directly, without a GP appointment or referral. It is a paid service, and the pharmacist confirms the cost before anything is supplied.

Choosing the private route does not remove your NHS options. You can speak to your GP at any point, and we would encourage you to tell them about any treatment you receive from us.

Leyton Pharmacy offers private consultations for acne, dermatitis and eczema, plaque psoriasis, athlete's foot, unwanted facial hair, hayfever, migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, haemorrhoids, traveller's diarrhoea, erectile dysfunction and male pattern hair loss. Each condition has its own consultation, which you book separately.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You do not need a GP referral or a GP appointment to use these services at Leyton Pharmacy. You book the consultation directly with us.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

What happens at the consultation?

What should I bring?

Bring a list of anything you currently take, including anything bought without a prescription, and the names of any treatments you have already tried for the condition.

Will you tell my GP?

Treatment and suitability

Can a pharmacist supply prescription medicines without a prescription from my GP?

Yes, for specific conditions. These services run under patient group directions, which are written instructions that allow a pharmacist to supply certain prescription-only medicines to patients who meet set criteria, without a separate prescription from a doctor.

Will I definitely be given treatment?

No. Treatment is supplied only where the pharmacist judges it is clinically suitable for you. Booking a consultation does not guarantee a supply.

What if treatment is not suitable for me?

The pharmacist will explain why and tell you what to do next. That may be a remedy you can buy without a prescription, an appointment with your GP, or NHS 111.

Is there an age limit?

Each service has its own criteria, including age. The pharmacist confirms them at your consultation, and you can call the pharmacy beforehand if you want to check.

Can I get help with more than one condition?

Yes. Each condition has its own consultation, so book one for each. Tell the pharmacist about any other treatment you are receiving so they can check the treatments are safe together.

What if my symptoms do not improve?

Come back to the pharmacy or speak to your GP. The pharmacist will tell you at the consultation how long treatment should take to work and when to seek further help.
